3 Project ideas.

  1. WHAT ARE THOOOOOOOOSE!!!!

Create a simple shoe device that checks your shoe swag in the morning. If your shoes are off point the machine screams WHAT ARE THOOOOOOOOSE!!!! Playing off the viral Vine meme. Am unsure how i would find a sensor to collect relevant data.

2. Clock or light that helps athletes understand and adapt their circadian rhythms whilst competing, travelling,  or preparing/training for events. New research shows that peak human performance varies depending on the time you wake up. Athletes that wake up early perform better 5-6 hours later around midday. Late risers perform better in the evening around 6-8 hours later. Circadian rhythms can be changed and adjusted.

3. Pressure map LED shoes. Idea is to hack a pair of transparent soled shoes and insert RGB LEDs in pressure spots that are used with pressure sensors to dynamically display the changing pressure zones as the user moves. As the pressure changes the colour of the led changes. Green = light pressure Blue = medium pressure and Red = Heavy pressure. Everyone seems to be doing LED shoes so I am considering doing something different with either the pressure of accelerometer data.

4. Take Ciggy and turn him into a fire. A set of logs and a led flame that you have to blow on very so often to keep alight. A great Netflix and Chill device.

5. Something Drake related. Because we all know Drake related stuff blows up on the internet right. Any ideas? Drake talking cushion? A Drake Comforter? A Drake pillow that whispers Drake lyrics until you fall asleep?  OK FUCK IT we’re going with the DRAKE!

“Whatever shall my final project be?” wonders Julia.

I didn’t have ANY ideas for a while. Now I have a bunch, but very little idea which are feasible… Here goes!

Idea #1: Expand on the innovative switch project

I did like my bike brake light and turn signals, and think that it could be a quite useful thing, and fun to make work really well and be a believable add on to bikes. That said, because I currently don’t bike at all, I’m a little less excited. If I did this, I would want the system to be as elegant and minimal as possible, so I see there being some different sensors involved, but I’m not sure the code would change significantly.

Idea #2: Leave a message at the door

My boyfriend is a first-year resident at Mount Sinai hospital. I’m in this program. So obviously, we’re seeing a LOT of each other. (Not.) We have tried leaving notes or videos for each other—especially during weeks when he works the night shift and we literally can go a week living in the same apartment without seeing each other—but it’s always a little annoying to find paper or take the time to make a video. I was thinking I could create something that is mounted on the wall that you can record short voice messages on, so that each time one of us left, we could leave a message for the other.

Idea #3: Feel the wind

Wind is awesome. Fans are not. I was wondering if I could hack a fan that has multiple settings and can turn side to side, and program it to run through a series of settings and positions to simulate a more random wind experience. No idea if I could really do this, and it sort of already exists

Idea #4: Get up and run

I always feel better if I start the day by moving—whether it’s a run, a walk, whatever. And yet, it is SO hard to do that when you just woke up. I was thinking of making an alarm clock that you turn off by putting on your sneakers. OR it could be hooked to a GPS, so you would have to get out the door before it would turn off… (I live in a 6 floor walk-up, so that would probably do it for me.)

Idea #5: I just wanted to hear your voice

Sometimes you don’t have time or can’t get in touch with someone you love, but you really want to hear their voice. My dad travels all the time and is always in some other time zone, so we don’t talk on the phone much. I was thinking of making some sort of small object that could be manipulated in a few ways (squeezed, shaken, pushed?) and playback pre-recorded messages from me, my sister, and my mom.

 

I have a few more ideas, but I’ll leave it at that. I look forward to getting some reactions!

Arjun Kalyanpur – Temperature Sensor v. Heat Gun

Hi all!

For this week’s homework, I decided to rig up the temperature sensor circuit (Exercise 10) found in our Ardunio handbook.

Since all it did at first was read the ambient room temperature, I had to make sure it actually worked. Thus, I busted out the heat gun to do battle.

As you can see below, my code won.

I’m really excited to see how this sensor could be used to add functionality to our next round of objects/products!

The Memory Wallet – Arjun Kalyanpur

Imagine you go to a bar or restaurant, indulge and imbibe, and decide on the spot to get up and go to a new place. You’re feeling free and happy; the night’s going so well!

Riding this sense of exhilaration, you decide “why not!” and tell your friends “this cab’s on me”. You pull out your wallet, only to find that you left your credit card 40 blocks and two glasses of wine behind. Embarrassment and a sense of loss take over. Your night is ruined.

But no longer! Enter “The Memory Wallet”. This proof-of-concept show what happens when an intelligent yet elegant switch is incorporated into one’s wallet.

A built-in circuit is interrupted by your card of choice. When you remove said card and close your wallet, it completes the circuit, jump starting a red LED that flashes at you and reminds you to always, always, close your tab!

The code itself is relatively simple, utilizing a pull-up resistor and digitalRead and digitalWrite commands to signal the LED to begin flashing when the switch is connected.

This was such a fun project, and I’d love to see what other complexity and code I could incorporate with some more time in the future!
