WEEK 10 final project idea

Friendly Chessboard for Beginners
A beginner-friendly chessboard that helps new players visualize moves. When you press a chess piece, small LEDs light up to show all the possible moves for that piece. It’s designed to make learning and strategy-building easier and more intuitive for beginners.

Pomodoro Fountain
I want to design a Pomodoro timer shaped like a small fountain or a koi pond. When the switch is pressed, the blue light ring turns on, representing the focus session. When it’s time to rest, the white light ring illuminates instead. After completing one full Pomodoro cycle, the statue at the center of the fountain lights up, signaling the user to begin the next round.

Doll House / Ghost House
I’ve always wanted to create a dollhouse—or perhaps a tiny ghost house—mainly using clay and acrylic panels. The exact function isn’t decided yet, but I imagine it could light up at specific times—like on the hour—to remind you to stand up, stretch, or drink some water. It’s more about blending everyday wellness habits with a little bit of poetic playfulness.
Maybe ghost house Pomodoro?

WEEK 11

Haunted-House Pomodoro

The idea is to divide different time blocks into different-sized little ghosts. When you press a ghost to start, it begins to flicker.

The first 25-minute ghost (with laptop) slowly brightens like a breathing light. When the 25-minute work session ends, that ghost stays lit.

Then the next 5-minute break ghost (with coffee cup or sth chill) starts flickering. This cycle repeats four times. After that, all the ghosts flicker at irregular rhythms for ten minutes, indicating a long break. Users can extend the break if they want, or start a new Pomodoro round.

Ideally, users can swap out the default small ghosts for different sizes—for example, a large 45-minute ghost, which works better for design students.

Materials:
Lightweight paper clay (for a rounded and cute finish)
Acrylic base
Sculpting tools
UV resin, pigments, and other painting tools
Batteries, chips, lights, switches
Magnets or other mounting methods

Prototype circuit and form:

  • Press the Start button: “Ghost a” flashes briefly as a start indicator.
    Then proceed in sequence:
  1. b Breathes for 25 minutes → b remains lit after completion.
  2. c Breathes for 5 minutes → remains lit.
  3. d Breathes for 25 minutes → remains lit.
  4. e Breathes for 5 minutes → remains lit.
  5. f Breathes for 25 minutes → remains lit.
  6. g Breathes for 5 minutes → remains lit.
  7. h Breathes for 25 minutes → remains lit.
  8. i Breathes for 5 minutes → remains lit.
  9. Finally: All ghosts flash at a random frequency for 10 minutes = long rest.
  10. After completing a full round, return to the “Waiting to press the button again” state to begin the next round of Pomodoro.

(Individual LEDs produce a better visual effect than a NeoPixel strip I think)

Video storyboard:
The video will show me doing my homework while using the Haunted-House Pomodoro. I’ll add little thought bubbles or small expressions to the ghosts as frame-by-frame illustrations.

  1. This is such a cute idea, its crazy how much progress you’ve made, the little ghosts are so cute. I agree that the individual LED’s look better than the strip. The idea of being able to exchange the sizes of the ghosts based on how much time you need is really interesting. I could easily see this being sold in like a stationary store.

  2. Hi Jay! I love your idea and your work so much! I have seen it in person and I think it’s going to be such a great way to implement pomodoro without using just a tomato. I’m interested to see how you shoot your video for this. What would your target market be? Kids? Or like for Halloween? It would definitely be cool to see this video in some context!

  3. I truly love everything about this project! I really like how you chose ghosts as a theme for the pomodoro, while also giving each ghost so much personality. I envision the ghosts being sold as collectibles. The sizing of the ghosts as references for the time they represent is also really great. Looking forward to seeing the video instructable of the project! Great job
