Inspired by the way sea otters give cherished shells or stones to those they care about, this plush otter holds a softly glowing shell. When squeezed, the shell light gently turns off, offering a stress-relieving tactile experience. After 30 minutes, the light turns on again—almost as if the otter is lovingly giving the shell back.

The Journey

1. Embroidery
I started with embroidery, adding delicate lines to the shell and the otter’s eyes to emphasize the design. Calculating the right size and scale was challenging, and it took several trials before I got it right.

2. Sewing
This project was my first time using a sewing machine. While the larger pieces were machine-stitched, I finished most of the details by hand, which gave the plush a more personal touch.

3. LED Circuit
One of the trickiest parts was configuring the LED circuit and figuring out the proper resistor for the bulb. After testing different options, I was able to achieve the soft glow that makes the shell feel warm and inviting.
Final Design

Key Takeaways ✨
- Learned how to use the sewing machine (still a long way to go, but a good start).
- Practiced and improved embroidery skills.
- Got better at hand sewing through repetition.
- Realized that managing multiple design details can be overwhelming—time management is essential to finishing on schedule.
Last but not least, Special Thanks 💫
I could not have completed this project without the support of my friends and staff:
- Anusha & Mallika – Thank you for teaching me how to use the sewing machine.
- Jisu – For supporting me with sewing and helping figure out the soldering.
- Batu – For encouraging me mentally and assisting with soldering as well.
- Gabriel – I bothered him a lot with embroidery questions—thank you so much for your patience and support!
