Anusha & Batu’s Lighter Case Against The Elements: Jemma

Product Photos

Batu and I decided to make a lighter case that would stand the test of a windy night on a beach in California. The struggle to keep the flame alive in the face of wind and low visibility after sunset, is one we know all too well.

We came up with a design for a lighter case that holds classic electric pocket lighters. It is ergonomic and intuitive in its design- thanks to Batu’s visionary 3D modeling and our many print tests.

It also lights up and follows a twinkly, hypnotic sequence perfect for a stoner’s entertainment and for illumination. This sequence is due to Anusha’s tinkercad experimentation and the soldering of 4 neopixels to a gemma and micolipo battery.

With this case, you can use your lighter without also pulling out your phone’s flashlight. The lights come through holes in the case, and are covered with glass cabachons, for a finished and futuristic look. The case also has a shield that you can slide upwards, that follows the curve of the overall case shape, therefore perfectly useful against gusts of wind.

This feature makes your lighter foolproof at what it does best.

Project Documentation: Opt 1 (advertisement)

Display the Issue- 2 people gathered around trying to light a cigarette at night. One person exclaims that they cannot see where to direct the light, and the flame keeps going out. capture the frustration of this experience

Pans to third person, who has just lit up their cig. They notice the frustration and offer their lighter. The two others marvel at the ease of this product

The third person describes how to make this lighter sleeve while other two listen intently.

Anusha’s Final Five Nights At Freddy’s Costume For Halloween

Bonnie The Animatronic Bunny

WHO:

Five Nights At Freddy’s Bonnie The Animatronic Bunny

WHY:

I wanted to do something niche, but recognizable to only the fan base. Five Nights fans are CRAZYY and I was immediately recognized many times throughout the night! I also love horror and this concept always stood out to me, as a kid.

WHAT (I USED): Foam, Acrylic Paint, Adhesive Spray, Solder, Gemma, Adafruit Jewels, Battery Pack, Medium Gauge Wire

WHAT (I DID):

The first thing I worked on was the ear headpiece. I cut foam with the band saw into 4 pieces and spent hours sanding them down to the correct shapes. Then, I sprayed them with adhesive spray before painting them.

I separately soldered wire to a metal headband (& later added supports + a second metal headband)

Finally I tackled the part I was most nervous about. I started on tinkered, with a tutorial of a blinking light sequence on the jewels that I was working with.

I played around with the code and used a bit of help from chat gbt to apply a fade between the yellow and red color switch.

Next, I soldered the Gemma to the 2 jewels, measuring them up against the glasses that they would be attached to.

HOW (I FEEL):

I am happy with the accuracy of this costume! And its wearability throughout the night.

Running out of time, during my laptop disaster, I thought I would not be able to pull it all together in the end. But after a last minute re-solder and borrowing Lauren’s laptop on October 31st at 4:45pm, I loaded the light animation onto my Gemma and was ready for the fashion show and parade!

HOW (I CAN DO BETTER):

I should have decreased the brightness significantly. Maybe also take into account my own eye protection. I want to be more fluent in coding language so I can pinpoint issues and troubleshoot with more confidence.

Anusha’s Halloween Costume Idea *UPDATED*

I am going to be the creepy animatronic bunny named Bonnie, from the Horror Video Game: 5 Nights At Freddy’s (where you need to survive 5 days in Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza which is haunted by murderous animatronics)

In the movie, which was created after the game, the animatronics’ eyes light up. I am considering having the ears, bow, or his red electric guitar light up- instead.

Here are my sketches:

Thank you to Wini who helped me get started with this excercise, and Mallika, and Gabriel for help troubleshooting!

Tuesday Oct 14 Updates:

  1. The costume will be a dark blue bodysuit I own + blue tights, a red velvet bow that I will buy, and the rigid, fragmented, bunny ears – which I will make from cardboard, wire, and felt. I will be adding lights to clear glasses, to depict the animatronic’s creepy glowing eyes – that turn from yellow to red to show that he is in his evil state. This will hopefully have a creepy effect.
  2. I will be using neojewels to represent glowing eyeballs. I may also add neopixel strips around the frames of the glasses ina constant yellow- to show the animatronic is “on” but not “evil”…. yet.
  3. Materials List:
  • found cardboard (cut into the 4 ear fragments)
  • dark blue felt
  • grey felt
  • stuffing
  • sewing machine or needle and thread
  • red velvet bow
  • clear glasses
  • blue clothing
  • neo jewels (2)
  • neopixel strips (4, 2 inch strips)
  • metal headband
  • thick wire
  • solder

To Do List:

  • order materials
  • write code for glowing eyes
  • test out code
  • attach battery to glasses
  • attach eyes to glasses
  • cut cardboard & felt
  • shape wire frame for ears
  • solder wire to hairband
  • glue cardboard to wire
  • sew or glue grey felt to blue felt
  • stuff the grey felt and close
  • sew or glue blue felt around the cardboard

Anusha’s Plush Night Light Proposal

Made a little fish for my sweet boy!

MY NIGHTLIGHT PROPOSAL

I cannot choose between 2 ideas, but good news is that I narrowed it down from 17:

Out of these, some standouts were the traffic light which could be used as a prop in the game: red light, yellow light, and the Michelangelo hands of god which could be displayed in a high school art class.

and of these, here are my two finalists

CRAB: Target Audience- Astrology lovers, children

Could be placed in a classroom, in a hotel room, or in a bedroom!

Crabs symbolize the Astrology Sign for end of June and beginning of july: Cancers! ♋️ This is my sign and I have lots of cancer pride. Ideally this stuffed nightlight would be part of an astrology series where everyone’s sign is represented.

I would use red, pink, orange, or coral colored fabric and create one shape for the body & legs, and another two for the pincher hands! I would also add eyes with buttons or something similar, and maybe sew a visible curve for the smile.

BDAY CAKE: Target Audience- People who do not like cake, but love their birthday!

I personally do not crave cake on my birthday, but I love birthday attention! This would be perfect for me, and for anyone who’s bday is coming up- as a sweet gift to them. I think it could be fun to add layers with different colors, and to embellish the top with different toppings. And of course, the diffused light can be inside the candle! I was inspired by the jellycat cakes- which are very expensive and are made under unethical conditions. This could be my ethical substitute for those popular and adorable toys, especially if I add a little face and a pair of legs!
