Inspired by the way sea otters give cherished shells or stones to those they care about, this plush otter holds a softly glowing shell. When squeezed, the shell light gently turns off, offering a stress-relieving tactile experience. After 30 minutes, the light turns on againāalmost as if the otter is lovingly giving the shell back.
The thought behind the project In a world full of Jellycats, ‘Heart in the right place’ is a night light for developing children who love a pop of color and personality to their spaces. The fun and whimsy night light aims to appeal to the children through not just the playful form, but also promote an appreciation for their natural surroundings. Made from waste fabric leftover at home, the night light uses contrasting fabrics to help portray a world with and without nature in an abstract way. The heart in the centre of the plush night light is the heart of the bunny, accentuated with a soft illuminating glow. Lastly, another area that helped forward this idea is the thought of utilizing fabric scraps and promoting sustainability ina small but meaningful way.
A few weeks ago I decided for my project I’d focus on transforming KEWPIE mayonaisse into a nightlight. This simple mayo packaging always stood out to me as a playful and interesting take on packaged food goods and I wanted to incorporate my love for cooking and design into my plushie project.
For this project, I set out to design a plush night light that blends my love for collectible display toys with functional lighting. Iāve always enjoyed surrounding myself with limited-edition pieces and objects that make my space feel unique, and I wanted to capture that same feeling in a handmade plush.
I’ve combined sewing, soft materials, and an LED circuit, and my goal was to create a toy that isnāt just for play, but also for displayāan object that transforms into an ambient presence when lit at night.
While I started with a different idea, the process led me to relocate the LEDs and add āorgansā inside the plush, so that when the light is turned on, the interior details are revealed, giving the design an unexpected inner life.
GlowClam is a plush night light designed to bring peace and comfort to users inspired by my own experience of falling asleep to the sound of ocean. It features a semi-rigid shell with smooth fabric and a more plushy and soft interior with soft lighting compared to the peal that sits on top of it which is the main light source. The different tactile and the partially hidden pearl encourages user to play with it. And feel the change of luminance as the shell open and close. GlowClam is designed for anyone who seeks a sense of peace and playfulness before bed. It encourages a bedtime ritual that feels safe and personal.
I have always been a night owl, which is why Iāve liked bats since I was young. They made me feel that I wasnāt alone during the late hours. Thatās why I chose to create a Honduran White Bat. Originally, my idea was a cat paw, but even during the prototyping phase, I realized I liked bats more, and they fit the theme of night better. I also thought it would be fun to highlight the batās yellow nose and earsācontrasting with its white furāusing LEDs.
For my plush night I was inspired by my dog – Coco. I only get to see my dogs during the weekend and it made me think of how humans experience “separation anxiety” of sorts when they’re away from their pets – and vice versa. Although I haven’t come up with an idea with how to deal with it for our pets yet, I wanted to create a plushie that reminded you of the feeling your pet gives you.
