The “Turn off, Tune in” Rug allows you to be fully present when you meditate. By utilizing conductive thread, the entire rug acts as a touch sensor, which when pressed will silence your phone and turn off all of the other electronics that might interrupt your meditation. I find myself often unable to fully let go of the distractions of everyday life when I’m disrupted by the buzz of my phone or the subtle hum of the tv. With this switch, gone are the days of running around the house to make sure you everything is off. Saving you time and peace of mind!

Process & Future Considerations:
I had a lot of fun making this project. The conductive yarn is a really awesome material and has so many interesting applications that I would love to explore. Some of the main speed bumps I had with this project were internet connectivity issues and lag in reaction time from adafruit IO to IFTTT. Once I got my capacitive touch sensor set up it had severe delays to shutting off the smart plug.
If I were to further develop this project, I would play around in IFTTT to find other interesting use cases for have a capacitive touch rug. One that initially comes to mind would be a counter for tracking the number of meditation sessions. Another might be turning on my coffee maker in the morning to pair these two actions in one and build a stronger habit.
Hope you enjoy as much as I did!
