TWA hotel (Connie Cocktail Lounge): MCR and MORSE Development have reignited the magic of Eero Saarinen’s landmark 1962 TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport, restoring and reimagining it as a first-class hotel. At the center of the hotel is Eero Saarinen’s iconic TWA Flight Center, where restaurants, bars and retail outlets have taken flight. Two hotel wings, designed to reflect and defer to the landmark TWA Flight Center, sit behind the historic building and contain 512 guestrooms with views of JFK’s runways and the TWA Flight Center.

Jessie’s Final Project Proposal

count down: 3! 2! 1!

The  ketchup splash light is inspired by a ketchup bottle. Its core idea is to “squeeze out light,” mimicking the gradual release of ketchup from a bottle.

Gradual Illumination: The lighting effect occurs in three stages, with each second introducing more brightness. In the first second, a faint red light appears; the second second adds more brightness; and the third second reaches full illumination.

Interactive Experience: The lamp’s on-switch is designed to simulate a “squeeze” action, potentially triggered by a touch or pressure sensor.

Inspiration:

This airplane meal tray set is designed with high saturation, candy-colored aesthetics and organic, streamlined shapes that mimic the contours of an airplane’s interior. The set includes a tray, three differently-sized bowls, and a cup, all capable of magnetic attachment to ensure stability during flights. Each piece is equipped with a base that lights up upon contact with the tray, serving both as illumination in dim conditions and as an interactive signal for cabin crew to collect the dishes when they are empty.

LipTones is designed to help users quickly identify the color of each lipstick, solving the common issue of not being able to distinguish shades from the exterior. Using an Arduino-controlled RGB sensor and LED lights, the box automatically detects the color of each lipstick when placed inside. The corresponding slot then illuminates with the exact shade, allowing for easy and accurate color identification.

Arduino will make an LED flash, simulating the gem-like effect on Barbie-themed bow-shaped wrist pouch. This code will cause the LED to blink at a regular interval.

  1. Use a resistor between the LED and ground.
  2. Upload this code to Arduino.

Jessie’s Plush Night Light

Heinz x Miss Tomato Plush Night Light

Material List:

Translucent smooth fabric

plastic bag

Product Story:

Introducing the Heinz x Miss Tomato Plush Night Light, a delightful blend of comfort and creativity. Inspired by the beloved tomato slice, this plush night light is soft to the touch and features a gentle yellow glow that shines from its seeds, evoking the warmth of a ripe tomato under the summer sun. As the glow softly radiates, it creates a relaxing ambiance, perfect for unwinding after a long day. The light represents the same comforting feeling Heinz Tomato Ketchup brings to every meal—a staple of joy and simplicity.

Challenge: Soldering 8 LED bulbs proved to be more difficult than expected, as it required precision to ensure that the connections were secure and that each bulb functioned properly. Looking ahead, I will need to solder even more bulbs for future designs, which means refining my technique and possibly exploring more efficient methods.

Another challenge I’m working through is figuring out how to effectively direct the light from the bulbs so that it shines naturally through the tomato seeds. It’s important to create the right diffusion so that the seeds appear to glow without the light being too harsh or uneven.

Jessie’s Rotten Tomato Decompression Light Proposal

Qian Jessie Wang

Story: The “Rotten Tomato” is for people who feel stressed or anxious. The soft, squishy texture and comforting light offer a soothing way to release tension. When squeezed, the tomato lights up, mimicking the feeling of squishing a real overripe tomato, which can feel satisfying.

  • Light Diffusion: The LEDs inside will glow brighter when the tomato is squeezed by using a combination of red and orange LEDs to give it a soft, glowing, “overripe” look.
  • Materials: microfiber fabric could allow the light to diffuse softly as the shape changes under pressure.

Christmas LED Light teardown

Background

My room has been decorated with these Christmas lights and I turn it on every night because I feel so cozy. I stare and watch these lights blink every time, dying to figure out how he’s blinking.

Teardown

This is a string of 16 star shape LEDs. I used a screwdriver kit for teardown.

Christmas LED lights consist of various parts:

  • LED Bulbs: The individual light-emitting diodes that produce light.
  • Wires: The insulated wires that connect the LEDs and carry electricity.
  • Resistors: Components used to control the current going to the LEDs, preventing them from burning out.
  • Power Plug: The plug that connects the light string to a power source.
  • Controller Box: A box that controls various light settings, like flashing, fading, or steady modes.
  • Fuse: A safety device located in the plug to prevent electrical overloads.
  • Connectors: Used to link multiple strings of lights together.
  • Housing/Enclosures: The protective casing around the LED bulbs.
  • Capacitors: Sometimes used in circuits to smooth out the power supply to the LEDs.

Christmas lights are made from 2 sets of materials:

  • A copper wire that is covered in green or white PVC plastic
  • Bulbs are made from blown glass, meal filaments, metal contact wires and plastic bases

Design Element: The bulbs on Christmas LED lights have a frosted housing that diffuses the light.

Reason for Design: Aesthetic Appeal

The diffusion smooths the harshness of the direct LED light, making it more visually pleasing. This enhances the festive atmosphere by providing a gentle, warm glow rather than a sharp light.
