For my final project I would like to design a light box that can be made from scrap parts. This light is to go along with an online show I do called “Dumpster Fire” which takes ‘video scraps’ from other filmmakers and media artists and edits them together to form an episode that is a mix of essay film/experimental film/video art.

I would like to write a code to go along with each episode that is a designed light show. The light box being made from scrap parts and evoking a dumpster would be a nice way to tie it in to the process of the show.

Some inspiration on how I could achieve different lighting effects with ‘garbage’:

This is a cool idea, Carmel! Here’s some feedback and some suggestions.
So to clarify, do you intend to make a lamp that sits on the coffee table while folks watch the show on the TV?
A light show that plays along to what’s on-screen reminds me of backlit TVs, here is a tutorial about that:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJSHDFETdV8 – looks like this one works more easily with a computer screen than a TV alone. This looks like the most straightforward way to get the actual video colors showing on a set of neopixels.
But if you wanted to hardcode your arduino to do a different light show in time with the episode, without directly connecting it to the video signal, that is another totally viable option.
I like the idea of using the trash to refract the light! What would the bin itself be made from? All the effects shown in your imagery require a surface closeby to see the effect, so are you sure you want it on the table, and not behind the TV, or hanging from the ceiling?
You were asked to brainstorm three ideas– are you super sure this is the one you want to go with? OK if so, just double checking since there’s nothing else to compare it to. Feel free to ping me by slack or email to discuss.
