Danna’s Homework 10

For this proposal, I would like to do an interactive artistic installation, involving a user in order for it to work. The idea behind this is to have a black vertical mirror (maybe acrylic) with two static pulse handles up front. The user would hold these handles with their hands and when the handles detect a pulse, that pattern is directly transmitted into the mirror and a color pattern appears on the mirror. This installation would convert your BPM into interactive art; and you could try it within different time frames, like after the gym, when you wake up, etc…

This installation is meant to be like an exposition in an open space (not public or home like), maybe an art gallery or school.

The purpose behind this idea, is to remind people of the amount of plastic we, as a species, have collected over time. This artistic installation includes plastic objects (maybe all be painted in white or be translucent) piled up on the floor one on top of the other, like a big cluster, and when they sense movement (footsteps approaching), colored lights turn on and illuminate the pieces.

This interactive installation is intended to raise awareness of the harm human contact has done to coral reefs throughout the world. The idea behind this proposal is that every time a human gets close to the art, the pieces retract and in a way say “please don’t touch me”. The parts are lit up in different colors as they are resting, and turn off when they feel attacked.

  1. Great brainstorm, Danna! Your sketches are also super fun.

    1. completely feasible. You don’t even need two handles, just one place to put your finger– here is a pulse sensor that works well with arduino: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1093 Here is one project tutorial that translates the beat into neopixel brightness, which you could likely modify to suit your needs: https://learn.adafruit.com/pulse-sensor-displayed-with-neopixels

    2. feasible, you could use your piezo buzzer as a vibration sensor! The magic here will be in how the pixels light up. Maybe 3D print the pieces?

    3. feasible but sounds hard to make the relationship to coral reefs apparent! you should consider using an separate multi-point capacitive touch sensor for this idea: 8: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1602 12: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1982
