Texting Mat

Lusha and May created a “Text-Mat”.  This surface can allow the user to write and send messages using one’s feet.  This text-mat is designed to send secret messages during meetings or classes.  The design utilizes conductive fabric and thread, as well as a flora-board.  The program contains 7 preset sentences.  The user can press a button to select the appropriate sentence and then a final button to send.

Secret Mat

At first, as Lusha knows a creative invention called “makey makey” for a long time. She wanted to use the makey makey to make a virtual keyboard with mat.

For example, people can use the foot to tap the message and send to other people secretly, without any people knows in the meeting setting.

Or student can use them in the classroom, they can send some text to their friends to complain when they think the class is so boring.

And Becky let her to consider about which situation is the best after the meeting. After discussing with her teammate-May, they decided to choose the classroom as their object.

Now, we need to choose what thing can be used for this project. As makey makey can only be use with the conductive things. Shoes can`t be conduct! Unless bare foot.

As Becky suggest to use the capacitive or resistive sensing pad that acts as a keyboard for discreet use in a classroom. After searching the information, we think capcitive is better!

Make an oversize plush game controller that actually works! Use conductive fabric and a Flora board to stitch up a capacitive touch sensing circuit. The controller acts like a computer keyboard, allowing you to play all your favorite old school games on emulator sites online.

Flash Fire Night Light

Hi! This my final project!

The materials I used are as follows:

1.Arduino UNO board

2.color strip

3. wool felt fabric

4.9V battery

At first, when I put the pixel light strip to computer, I find that my whole light strip just

lights six lights which make me crazy. And my computer often pop-ups the warning:

Finally, Becky and Tak help me to solve that problem, the reason why there is only six lights light is that the 60 pixels at full brightness draws a lot if power, and Tak helps me to change Arduino UNO board from the flora board.

As my conception, I need to use the match to ignite the fire. However, I realized that the motion sensor need to move like change the X/Y/Z axis constantly. But my fire can`t move! After that, I figure out  to use the resistant to turn on the fire. I make a code which I just touch sightly to the resistant, and than the fire can be ignited!

Flash night light

I change the word cupcake and upcycled to flash light.

I want to simulate the process of igniting the fire.

I will use wool felt and cotton to sew all the things in this project,like the fire ,candle,firebox.  As I have been to North Europe twice, the Nordic like to use wool felt to make things. Because wool felt can bring them warmness.

In the night,  My work ,the wool felt with fire ,can reveal the warmth in the home.  Especially for the children, they can experience this fire process without considering safety issues.

And I want to use two motion sensors. One is to simulate the candle strike the firebox. The other detects the shaking motion of the litten candle which can ignite the fire. (As there are two things, I need to use two boards to control the different light, One is flora board, the other is Arduino UMO board)And I want to make the light twinkle just as the real fire.

I only have blue led, I need to buy the red one.

Just touch the resistance, the led can be twinkle and twinke.

However, I am wondering that the leds I use can be bright enough though the wool felt? Some expects suggest me can use food preservation kit which is light-conductive to pack the led. Or maybe I need to buy the big and brighter led? I have searched  and ask other experts, is it piranha LED can be as my light?

Shake~Shake!

I want to use the flash light as my new word.

There was a small discussion of arduino direct by Wolfgang last Friday night in POD studio. Big thanks to Wolfgang!  I enjoy the moment, everyone around the table to do the arduino!

Firstly, I try to use the sparkle-skirt code to make the motion sensor code work. But, It never light! And I try to use other people`s board which can light! That means I need to resew the board and motion sensor again!

Upcycled / cupcakes

Initially, I was confused about the word—upcycled.

From wikipedia: upcycled is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. Some of my classmates explained that to me with some interesting examples!

An old discarded suitcase..I love how they used random pairs of legs which were most probably recycled…the possibilities are endless with suitcases.

How could I combined the Upcycled and cupcakes together? As you know, cupcakes are food, how could I design upcycled cupcakes? While I didn`t want to wix the cupcakes to make another food. So, I changed the direction to the cupcake lines which were colorful and pretty.

I just folded it arbitrarily and found it like a blooming flower!
As the Mid Autumn festival, a significant festival in China, is coming, I decided to make the cupcakes lines lantern to celebrate our festival!

In China, people will put the lanterns in the river to express thier emotion in the mid-autumn festival.  The lanterns in the floor with shadow seem like the lantern in the river. Outside the window is Manhattan, inside the window is my deep thoughts. When I put them in the Ludlow dorm, my chinese fellows told me they all miss China now!

My name is Lusha Huang, I graduated from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with a BFA in Industrial design this year. I come from Guangzhou, a metropolitan city, which is near to Hongkong,China.

I started learning painting since I was little, then I receive formal art education at the middle school affiliated to Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts which have collected some of my works in its gallery. And I have been pursuing both beauty and depth in all of my works.I like my major very much, and it is my intention to add the elements of happiness and warmness to people’s life through my works

I believe as a product-design student, it is very important to expand my own horizon. In fact I was invited to a lot of countries like Singapore, Janpan,  Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Netherland and the US to exchange ideas about design.  And their designs all have their own cultural and regional characteristic.

Nowadays more and more Chinese product-designers are trying to change the situation that products are not just simply “MADE in china”, but actually “CREATED in China”. And I have my own insight about this, about how to combine cultural element with products. As a Chinese, I have been deeply influenced by the local culture, and that’s why a lot of Chinese cultural elements could be seen in my portfolio.
