Concerto is box which creates different drum sounds when the musician taps pedals by hand or foot. You may have seen how many street musicians carry a lot of instruments. It may looks nice, but it’s unnecessary and inconvenient. Or you have the experience of playing guitar. In fact, musicians (especially guitarists) only need a small box to synthesize the drum sound.

Each CONCERTO can make two different sounds. Musicians can also customize their drum sound or sound effects by using USB to upload into CONCERTO.


Scenario 1: This product does not need to be exclusively for a drummer, guitarists may need some basic drum sounds to enrich their music. When people play guitar, they can put CONCERTO on the floor and make connection with speakers and charger (portable charger).

Scenario 2: If you want to play guitar with your friend, you don’t need to prepare a drum kit. You can give your friend the CONCERTO which can be put on the lap easily and then start your performance.

Scenario 3: When you want to create a new song by using guitar, CONCERTO definitely is your best friend. You can make or change beat to assist you to find the best tempo of your new song whenever you want.

I want to design a box which can make different drum sound through tapping the footboard by using pressure sensors, sound board and speaker. As you can see the street musician carry a lot instruments. It’s fancy though but It’s not necessary. They just need a small box that can make drum sound. Even for guitar lover, when they play guitar, they also need some basic drum sound to assist them playing.



Everyone has different sound of footsteps. I want to record them and put into a box. When you turn the box over, it will change a new sound of footstep. So each one box can record 6 different sound.  If I say 6 people in one group, then they have their own box, when you hear the sound, maybe you would know something about personality and identity.


The Idea is pretty easy. people blow at one side of this box and fragrance will be generated at another side. As a portable device, people can take it everywhere and make fragrance anytime.



This is my final skull flush night light. Everybody have such experience, when you want to pee at night, you have to walk in darkness till you find the switch. So the skull is for house use, you can hang it next to the switch or put it at the corner. Or you can just take it at night to scare people!

It solves the practical problem in daily life or just for prank.

Since the first prototype, this time I make a bigger one. And the black fabric is changed to a new one which has higher light transmission. And I also make three separate hollow space for the LED light .Therefor, LEDs are stable inside of the skull. And I also made a small pocket for the battery pack at the back of the skull. Integrated! Easy to switch on and off.

Prototype of Flush Nightlight — Runshi Wei

First prototype of Flush Nightlight Skull

The idea is that Skull is horrible and heavy. I want to use artificial cotton to make a skull shape. And the light of LED will come out from the eyes and nose. I hope people can use it in the dark night!

After class I started to make prototype of my soft skull.

  1. First I find some pictures of skull, and pick one which is more typical and classic.


2. Cut it into the shape of skull.


3. Then I started to choose some suitable material for my prototype.


I was supposed to using black fabric to make the skull’s eye and nose. I got stretchable one, furry one, little bit harder one. As for the surface of skull, I chose the beige fabric, because it is harder for forming the shape.

4. Then I cut the fabric into the shape of skull and make one into hollowed shape with aye and nose.


5. Sewing the black fabric on the back of the skull face.

6. Sewing two skull faces together (front and back). And put some filler and 3 LED into the skull.

Then I found a big Problem!!! You can’t the LED light through the black fabric, because the transmission of light of black fabric is incredible low! As you can see the final product, You can not see the light clearly.

So this is a big problem for my prototype. I am trying to figure out a new way to fake the the hollowed part of the skull.

Here is the circuit diagram of prototype and the sewing work last week in class.

Proposal 1 Dandelion

I want to design a box and fake dandelion inside. When people blow at the side of box, people will see the swing of dandelion and will get the floral smell. The LED is the fake glow worm. People can see a view that several glow worms fly in the swing dandelion with floral smell.

Proposal 2 Flush skull

Skull is horrible and heavy. I want to use artificial cotton to make a skull shape. And the light of LED will come out from the eyes and nose. I hope people can use it in the dark night!

Proposal 3 Light in mouth

It is very ridiculous that some people want to eat light bulb. PLEASE DO NOT TRY! Because you can not take it out any more. So I design a light mask. It seems like there is a light bulb in your mouth.

Teardown – Nintendo Zapper

Nintendo Zapper

I bought it in the E-waste Warehouse in Brooklyn. The Zapper allows players to aim at the television set display and “shoot” various objects that appear on the screen such as ducks, clay pigeons, targets, cowboys, criminals or other objectives. The Zapper is used on supported NES games, such as Duck Hunt and Wild Gunman. The Zapper could also be used on the title screens of games to move the cursor—done by pointing the device away from the screen and pulling the trigger—or starting the game (pointing at the screen and pulling the trigger).

This gun is pretty classic and stylish. When people hold it, it seems like you are holding a real gun, perhaps because of the Bob-weight. There is several components in it. The trigger structure is interesting and through the Teardown I realized this structure. And the trigger connect the sensor (kind of flip-floph) and activate the circuit board and laser light.
