Hi! It’s me Elisa Werbler

Hi there! I’m Elisa Werbler.

I’ve lived in New York for about four years since completing my undergraduate degree at RISD in Furniture Design.

My building skills and desire to experiment with materials led me to my position at Anthropologie where I designed and fabricated large scale (and small scale), displays for customers to marvel at, and often destroy.

I also make limited edition silkscreened prints and sculptural objects.

Here’s an example:

Hello World! from Steve Hamilton

SteveFuzzyHat

I grew up in Southern California where I once refused to go to a private school my mom tried to send me because the uniform included corduroy pants.  After studying Literature and Philosophy at Santa Clara University I moved to San Francisco and then after deciding I wanted to work on New York Indie Style movies I moved here in 1990 and began a career as a Film Editor under the mentorship of NY Indie Film Icon Hal Hartley and as a sound designer on several movies for currently very “un” indy Ang Lee.  I started making sound and video art about 15 years ago and I’m relatively obsessed with a variety of bleak existential narratives.

After 20 years of film editing I thought it was time for a change and when thinking hard about what I would have done with my life if I’d not been a filmmaker I remembered the pants.  I’ve been obsessed my entire life with the tiny details that make life interesting, fun, functional and beautiful.  I also feel like maybe there’s more to life than filling it with media so I’ve decided to engage more fully in the physical world and this design program is the place.

You can look at my artwork at this blog here  . . .

Over the past few years I have focused in a various fields that include sculpture, furniture, drawing, printmaking, and sewing. I have also worked for Wholefoods Market, which has grown my interest in food industry. This new interest has brought me into food design and how it can inform our views of this world.

Eliz Ayaydin Class Introduction

IMG_8219

Hi! I’m Eliz and I was born and raised in Chicago.  I moved to Nashville for undergraduate studies and recently moved to New York in order to begin my graduate studies at SVA.  After experiencing life in the Midwest and the South, I am thrilled to explore a new lifestyle here on the East Coast.

As for my hobbies, I enjoy traveling and being active.  In the wintertime I love to ski and in the summertime I love to swim and boat.  In addition, I played classical piano for 12 years and identify with the amount of time and dedication I put into my music studies.

I’m looking forward to Making Studio! I have a little bit of experience with making and am eager to learn about all the different types of fabrication tools.  I am especially excited to integrate programming into making things.  This past summer, I took an interest in coding and took part of a computer science class through Udacity, an online service which offers free classes. After this experience, I’m eager to see how different codes can be applied to product design.

Meet Julia Plevin

Hi there,

I’m Julia. I get anxious when people ask where I’m from because I’ve done so much moving around this past decade. I haven’t lived in the same place for more than one year since 2005. I studied History (focused a lot on fashion history) at Dartmouth College, then I lived and worked in Hanoi, Vietnam for two years before moving to San Francisco.

I’m a writer, editor, and storyteller. I wrote a column for VentureBeat about working at a tech startup in San Francisco and have been published in The Atlantic.

I’ve always been interested in the cultural history and what the clothing people wear says about the moment in time.  Like, did you know that the invention of the safety bicycle in the 1890s was the most effective factor in changing women’s attire from big clunky skirts to streamlined bloomers?

I love adventuring and being active. I’m a runner, yogi, climber, and surfer. I hope to make some cool products for some of my favorite activities that incorporate the ethos I believe in.

Meet George Crichlow

everyday people

I come to SVA by way of the Strategy/Consulting world.  In my prior life I examined the relationship between people, culture and technology. My work includes helping to re-position, re-imagine or re-invent businesses.

During the rest of the day, i’m trying to learn to weld, sew and sketch with the ambition of creating products and services that have commercial and cultural impact.

So about me: I grew up in El Paso, Texas or as we locals like to call it El Chuco. It is a border town and one of the safest cites in the US. It is on the border with Juarez, Mexico which is one of the most dangerous cities in the world (think No Country for Old Men). I am Mexican American. Here I am as a kid:

I studied filmmaking in my undergrad education. After graduation I worked as a documentary video editor at a small studio in Berkeley. I then started working at a consulting firm–Bassett & Partners. We specialize in ethnographic research and design/brand strategy. Ingrid’s job at IDEO is similar to what I did/do except we did not do prototyping. After years of working with/for many talented designers I decided that design school was for me!

If you want to know a little bit about some of the projects I have worked on (work and personal) you can check out the portfolio section on the website I made for my application to this program here.

I am really looking forward to this class and working with all of you! Here I am in Berlin at the Hamburger Bahnhof aka Museum für Gegenwart. The exhibit was ryoji ikeda’s db (decibel).
